HABC Celebrates Public Housing Leadership at Annual Banquet

The Pleasant View Gardens Community Center was transformed into a Winter Wonderland and bustled with excitement on December 8th as the Annual Resident Leadership Appreciation Banquet took place. The event had all of the festive elements – scrumptious food, a live DJ, dancing, raffle prizes, and even a photo booth!

HABC Executive Director, Janet Abrahams, honored Resident Councils and the Resident Advisory Board (RAB) representatives who volunteer at community sites. “It pleases me to collaborate with such a dedicated group of community volunteers,” said ED Abrahams.

The celebratory banquet brought together an esteemed and supportive group of dignitaries to express heartfelt appreciation to resident leaders who truly care about their communities. Special guests who joined the Executive Director at this year’s banquet included: Jeminie Bryon, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the HUD Office of Community Planning and Development and former Deputy Executive Director of HABC; HUD Field Office Director, Carol Bryant Payne; and Ella Broadway, President of the Resident Advisory Board. Mayor Catherine E. Pugh also made a special appearance to greet guests and recognize the spirited efforts of the honored resident leaders.

An exemplary cast of awardees received special recognition and were presented with honorary certificates for their dedication and service. The following Leadership Appreciation recipients are listed below:

  • Belinda Blue, Housing Choice Voucher Program
  • Wallace Craig, Lakeview Towers, Public Housing
  • Mary Leighton, Rehabilitated/Scattered Sites
  • Michelle Holmes, O’Donnell Heights
  • Angela Epps, Special Recognition

Residents have had a voice in decisions that affect their lives since 1968, when then Housing Commissioner Robert C. Embry created the first ever Resident Advisor Board (RAB). RAB is responsible for communicating resident concerns to HABC and advocating for their needs. Today, thousands of residents benefit from the respected voiced of those leadership representatives.
